Over the three days, we had some query over 14 examples of the 264 wines, constituting a possible failure rate of 5%. Four of the first bottles were affected to differing extents by TCA, suggesting that although it is much improved, cork taint is not a thing of the past, even at this exalted level.

Those behind the scenes of the tasting efficiently ensuring that we all had 22 pristine samples of the right 2013 Chardonnay in the right glasses – served in flights of eight, seven and seven – had their work cut out. Apparently a shocking 41% of cork-stoppered bottles were affected by TCA, with the Patrick Piuze, Valmur, Chablis, the worst affected.

Diam – Guarantees 100% TCA Free corks
But, despite Diam’s assurance that they remove 100% of TCA, surely they have had customers claiming to have found TCA in their wines? They say they have occasionally found TCA on the bottom of one of their corks, in which case, they say, it got there via TCA infection of the wine from another source, or on the top, in which case it got there from the winery atmosphere, but TCA has apparently never been found in the incriminatory middle of a Diam cork.
